Graduate Research Mentorship

by Kristin Chernoff last modified 2008-01-22 14:25
DEADLINE: February 22, 2008

DETAILS:

Students selected for this program for 2008-2009 will receive an $18,000 stipend plus mandatory standard fees (excluding tuition). In addition, if invited to present the results of their collaborative activities at a conference held during the academic year, awardees may be reimbursed up to $500 toward their travel expenses. Awardees will be asked to submit a year-end program evaluation to the Graduate Division. Mentors will also be asked to submit a year-end evaluation of their participation in the program. This program assists doctoral students in acquiring and developing sophisticated research skills under faculty mentorship.

Faculty mentors are expected to assist student participants with research leading to the development of a doctoral dissertation. In addition, the applicant and the faculty mentor should provide an outline of the proposed training and other collaborative activities (no more than four pages) and a single letter of recommendation from the faculty member who will serve as the mentor describing the mentor relationship and the project that the student will complete during the 2008-2009 academic year. If a mentoring relationship has already been established between applicant and faculty member, describe additional mentoring activities that would occur during this period.

Applications from all areas will be reviewed, with special consideration to be given to applicants from disciplines where research assistantship funding is generally less available. Individuals from cultural, racial, linguistic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in graduate education are especially encouraged to participate in the program.

These submission criteria also apply to the Eugene Cota-Robles award recipients who are activating their Graduate Research Mentorship award in 2008-2009. Applicants must be nominated by their department or school.

Applicants must be:

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Intended for doctoral students who:
    • complete at least one but no more than four years of UCLA doctoral study by the beginning of the fellowship year
    • have not yet advanced to candidacy

MATERIALS NEEDED:

    • A Your proposal outlining training goals and activities for the academic year (maximum 4 pages double spaced)
