From “Social Cues” to Research Clues: Marschak, May 28

The final Marschak Colloquium event for this academic year delves into the pathways to collective intelligence from the view and through the research of a UCLA sociologist trained in mathematical physics.  On Thursday, May 28, at the Young Research Library (Conference Room 11360), Prof. Jacob G. Foster of UCLA Sociology will present “On the Shoulders of Giants? Science, Social Learning, and Collective Intelligence” to a cross-disciplinary audience to gather beginning at 3 PM. “The fabric of past knowledge” he explains, “collectively woven from materials, methods, problems, and people, provides a predictable substrate for future discovery.”

Prof. Foster is a computational sociologist with a Ph.D. in Physics from the Univ. of Calgary. He develops formal models of the evolutionary dynamics of ideas and institutions.

The Jacob Marschak Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Mathematics in the Behavioral Sciences is an interdisciplinary lecture series hosted by UCLA’s School of Social Sciences to explore the role of mathematics in the behavioral sciences.  Its mission is to provide an interdisciplinary dynamic environment in which to showcase and explore that role. The colloquium is organized by the Marschak steering committee at UCLA which consists of Susanne Lohmann, Professor of Political Science & Public Policy, UCLA; Dan Blumstein, Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology; Louis Gomez, Professor of Education; and Mark Kleiman, Professor of Public Policy
