- EKINS, EMILY ELISABETH - emilyekins@ucla.edu (Political Science PhD Graduate Student) Subfield: Political Economy, American Politics, Comparative Politics, Methods - My research focuses on both political economy and American politics. With the recent 2008 Presidential Election, my research has focused on campaign strategy and spending. My research has also focused on regulatory policies in the US and deregulation in the 1970s allowing for competitive markets. In addition, I am currently analyzing US consumption patterns. Despite recent increases in the income gap over the past 20 years, I’m interested in how the average or median well-being of Americans may have improved over this period as a result of greater competition in the market place. For example, recent innovations in pharmaceuticals and technology in the health care industry has improved the lives of individuals. Through free market competition, prices on these expensive goods and services has decreased over the years. I want to understand how this has occurred and to what extent good governance allowed the market to work. In conjunction with this, I study public opinion, survey research, and quantitative methods. In addition, I study economic institutions to understand which are most important for economic growth. Specifically I have focused on British, American, Russian, and Eastern European political and economic development to understand how their economic institutions have evolved.
