Members of the Comparative Politics field conduct research about democratic transitions, political economy, globalization and integration, political development, institutional design, political violence, and the politics of Europe, Russia, East Asia, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Numbering some sixteen active faculty members, our Comparative Politics group is noteworthy among top-ranked departments for its combination of specialized area expertise with cutting-edge methodological sophistication in formal theory and statistical methods. In recent years, members of the Department won awards for the best paper in comparative politics presented at the APSA meetings, the best book in comparative politics, the best dissertation in comparative politics, and the best paper published in the APSR. Many faculty have received distinguished national fellowships. In part because of the strength of its faculty, and in part because of our rigorous graduate curriculum, we think UCLA is one of the best places in the country for graduate training in comparative politics. Our department encourages students to become firmly grounded in their knowledge of particular countries and regions, and draws upon a host of active and well-funded research centers to support field work overseas. Comparative political research is funded by the African Studies Center, the Center for European and Eurasian Studies, the UCLA Asia Institute, the Latin American Center, and the Center for Near Eastern Studies. Students combine their mastery of the histories and cultures of particular countries with advanced training in comparative research design, statistical methods and mathematical modeling. The conceptual and empirical sophistication of our program can be appreciated in the published work of recent and current Ph.D. candidates. Their articles have appeared in the American Political Science Review, the British Journal of Political Science, the American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, World Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, The China Quarterly, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, the Journal of Modern African Studies, and Third World Quarterly. |
